Benchmark

Making a mark

An internship at a local Malaysian furniture design store, Kedai, was my first foray into woodworking. Benchmark, an interactive public installation for Malaysia's annual music festival, Good Vibes Fest 2016, features 100 different benches made by a small four-person team. With only two weeks to produce one-of-a-kind two-seaters out of our workshop's limited collection of scrap timber and recycled materials, our team employed a "quick and dirty" design approach to meet our target. Our goal was to produce pieces that could withstand the rough handling of festival-goers without compromising on creativity. Pieces that survived the two-day event were later auctioned off at our storefront. As a complete novice at the time, I'm proud to have been able to contribute twenty-five pieces to our ambitious project.
