Save the daylight for later

In collaboration with Swedish retailer, Designtorget, I partnered with Sofia Ljung to design a quintessentially Scandinavian souvenir for springtime gift-giving. We took the all-too-familiar seasonal affective disorder and turned it on its head by designing from and for the Scandinavian struggle of having shorter daylight hours. By featuring solar power and home gardening in our piece, our goal was to remind people of the pivotal role the sun plays for all living things. That, and the symbiotic relationship between people and their surrounding greenery. Made from hand-turned lärk and hand-bent anodised aluminium, we employed the Japanese woodburning technique, shou sugi ban, to achieve a natural water repellant finish suitable for housing plants in damp soil.
