"Room in a Room" was a collaborative project between Konstfack and a primary school in the neighbouring suburb of Mälarhöjden. From a partnership between the Industrial Design and Textile Design departments, five rooms were conceptualised for the interactive play of our target audience, the students of Lögarebergret Montessoriskola, within Konstfack's large foyer. We had only a small 3m x 3m area to construct a play space using the limited collection of textiles and scrap timber we had at our disposal. Our rooms were to represent the specific groups of kids we had worked with. In our case, we wanted to cater to the different playing styles each of our kids displayed; some were shy and wanted more privacy while others were more outgoing and would opt for full visibility. With this in mind, we imagined a flower blooming in slow motion where each petal would open up to reveal its secret centre. Using an easy-to-handle pulley system, the kids were able to control the blooming of the flower room to suit their playing needs.
